You are either one of the two following types of 'equestrian'...
A) You can be found in the barn usually wearing jeans unless you're riding. This by no means means that you're ashamed of form fitting, butt grabbing, some sort of spandex involved pants. But maybe, hey, they're not really your thing and you'd rather save them for riding only.
B) You can be found gallivanting in your breeches all day, all night, and would much rather wear them around the barn then any other type of Pantaloon. Just even the chime of the word 'horse' and you're adoring a pair of suede knee patch pants, even if you're going to the barn to merely stand and look at the animals. You got those damn pants on. And yes, maybe one time while you were hosting at work you had 'absolutely no other clothes to wear' and you just had to bust out those rust Tailored Sportsman's that you've been keeping oh so clean (RIDING PANTS ARE TRENDY, GO TO TOPSHOP OK.)
I would sort myself under the 'B' category. And yes, I hosted in riding pants.
Let me have my moment on the stage here and say this: I freaking love riding pants. I get home from the barn and sometimes it takes a couple hours to even get me out of those babies. I think my brain has now associated them with my second skin. There are a couple things I love about riding pants; no restriction, usually great pockets, make your ass look great, belt loops if that's your thing, come in a variety of funky colors, you can wipe your dirty hands on them because you solely wear these pants TO GET DIRTY. What a selling feature! And secretly you've been fashionable before you even knew what fashion was!

On a less fashionable note and a more equine related note, it isn't often that for the hell of it I'm throwing on my riding pants and hitting the town. I think that one time may have been in a limbo of my riding and I was obviously feeling a touch desperate. I can be in the barn for up to ten hours a day sometimes, so when I'm hitting the bar with my friends, you better believe I'm hitting it with a different choice of bottoms. Dare I say, skirt?
If I'm going to be spending 10 hours a day in one pair of pants though, they best be great.

1. My recent discovery for my admiration for full seat breeches, is just about as recent as my admiration for sitting trot. At first I found full seat breeches a bit much and not as free and giving as I was used to, but when I came around to great dressage school with Hobbs the other day, I felt full seats and I really make a connection. In my opinion if you're going to invest, put some money down. A nice thick full seat, with good quality suede is really going to get your butt sticking in the saddle. For a couple hundred dollar a pop, these Cavallo breeches are going to deliver quality for years to come. Be prepared for an interested first ride if you've never walked in the way of full seat before.
2. Kerrits. I do believe this company made a huge breakthrough a couple years ago. No one had gone in the direction of affordable breeches that didn't make you look like you were wearing the saggy jods you had to wear as a kid. At first, I'm going to be honest, I was skeptical. I wasn't sure if such riding pants were going to deliver what I love about my usual suspects. But, once I grabbed a pair of the Sit Tight supreme breeches, my mind was made up. These are the hybrid you're looking for if you're into full seats, but find the very nice Cavallo ones I bit restricting to jump in. These Kerrits breeches are a dream come true in every sense when you're out on cross country. Pants. With practically BUILT IN STICKY SPRAY. Sign me up. There everyday pull on breech is perfect for layering in winter over top some nice woolen tights, or for those hot hot hot summer days when you just wish you could wear shorts.
3. The front zip, knee patch style Tailored Sportsman is probably the most notorious in my closet. It's sleek, looks great, always fits well, comes in a variety of colors, also comes with a 'fake' full seat type of stitching and I can wear these pants all. day. long. In every sense of the word, this company manufactures 'Fine Riding Apparel'. It's a classic company that has been around since I've ever known, and they keep up with the times, but still hold true to their original classic breech with quality you can trust to ride in over and over and over again. I have NEVER thrown a pair away. That says something!
4. Ariat Low Rise - Side Zip Breech. A couple of these babies are in my little riding pant collection and I'm glad the day I decided to try something new. These pants are so, so great for summer, they're nicer and breezy, have a great set of pockets, are friendly in the washing machine, come at a great price, which makes them one of my favorite schooling breeches. The don't have velcro sides at the ankles which I love, so they look really nice and sleek underneath your socks. Love these breeches, and need many more! My favorite ones are in paisley! Dream come true you say? Yes, 100%.
Often I feel a little cheated that ladies be strutting casually around my city wearing riding pants, but we all know fashion comes and goes, so just like the tall boot craze, we're going to have to ride this one out.
So are you A, or B? What's your most likely go to schooling breech? Are you a full seat lady? (GENTLEMAN?)
